1) m - 2n = 3

2) 4m + n = 1

multiply 2) by 2

2a) 8m + 2n = 2

1)     m -  2n = 3    add these together to eliminate the n's

9m = 5

m = 5/9

substitute into 1) (the one we did not modify.

5/9 - 2n = 3

-2n = 3*9/5

-2n = 27/5

n = -27/10 = -2.7
