This is an identity. Let t=tan(x), then tan(2x)=2t/(1-t2), cot(2x)=(1-t2)/(2t).

½(cot(x)-tan(x))=½(1/t-t)=½((1-t2)/t)=(1-t2)/(2t).

Therefore tan(2x)≡½(cot(x)-tan(x)) for all x.
