An easy way to find out is to write 1/7 as 8/56 and 1/8 as 7/56.

So we now only need to compare the numerators 8 and 7. Since 8 is bigger than 7, 1/7 is bigger than 1/8.

If the numerator is 1, then the fraction with the smaller denominator is always the greater.
