In an earthquake the area affected is circular with the epicentre as the centre or source of the disturbance, because the shock waves generally move outwards in all directions, making a circle. So the radius of the circle is 120 miles and the area is 120*120*(pi) square miles=14400(pi)=45,240 sq miles approx.
