Since bus and train fares are the same his average fare cost for one week: outward=1.25(3 bus+1 train)=5. The same for the inward trip, total 5+5=10.

Other alternatives are travelling out by a different mode of transport to returning. There could be 4 bus trips out (cost 5) and 2 train (cost 2.50) and 2 bus trips (cost 2.50) back, totalling 10.

Monthly pass=40, which is an average of 40/4=10 a week, because the pass presumably allows travel in both directions.
