Divide 1st equation by 2: 2x+2y+z=280

Divide 2nd equation by 3: 3x+3y+2z=430

Subtract the first of these from the second: x+y+z=430-280=150.

So he paid $150 for 1 shirt, a pair of pants, 1 hat.
