The x intercepts in (1) are -3 and 0, so on your axes, write a small cross at (-3,0) and on the origin (0,0) which is also the y intercept (2). The axis of symmetry is a vertical line through the point (-1½,0), so mark this point on the x axis and draw a vertical line (parallel to the y-axis) through the point. The parabola (curve) is symmetrical about this line, in other words, the line acts as a mirror, reflecting half the curve.
On this axis of symmetry is the vertex where y=-9, so it’s the point (-1½,-9). This vertex is the lowest point on the U-shaped curve (parabola) and the curve must pass through all the points you marked earlier.
