Therefore we have,

AC=CD

5x-8=16-3x

5x+3x=16+8

8x=24

x=24/8

x=3

AD=AC+CD       or AD=2AC or AD=2CD

AD=5x-8+16-3x

AD=2x+8

AD=2(3)+8

AD=6+8

AD=14 units
