If n is the number, we have 4(n-3)=4; n-3=1, n=4.

To break this down we start with the last operation which was to multiply by 4. This gave the answer 4, so the opposite of multiply is divide, and therefore we divide the product by 4, and 4/4=1. Now we know the difference between the number and 3 is 1. That means the number is the sum of 4/4 and 3=4. The number is 4.
