Daisy has one cucumber that is 3 inches long and another that is 5 inches long. Schedule cuts the cucumber into 3/8 inch thick slices and added them to a salad. How many 3/8 inch thick slices does Daisy have?

The 3 inch cucunber is cut into 3 / (3/8) = 3 * (8/3) = (3 * 8) / 3 = 24 / 3 = 8 slices

The 5 inch cucunber is cut into 5 / (3/8) = 5 * (8/3) (5 * 8) / 3 = 40 / 3 = 13 1/13

The 5 inch cucunber is cut into 13 slices at 3/8 inch each = 13 * 3/8 = 39/8 = 4 7/8 inches

i.e. there is a 14th slice left over at 1/8 inch thick

Total number of slices at 3/8 inch thick is 8 + 13 = 21
