Problem: how much is 4 1/2 + 1 4/6 =
adding fractions please explain how you got the anwser

Adding and subtracting fractions: always change the
fractions so they have a common denominator. 6 is the
common denominator we want here.

4 1/2 + 1 4/6 =
4 3/6 + 1 4/6 = 5 7/6
Take care of the improper fraction, 7/6:  7/6 = 1 1/6
5 7/6 = 6 1/6
