When you win a race you run it in a shorter time than the other runners. So we are looking for the smaller of 1/2 and 3/5. 1/2 is the same as 5/10 and 3/5 is the same as 6/10, or we can work out the time in minutes: 1/2 hour is 30 minutes but 3/5 hr is 3/5*60=36 minutes. So the shorter time is 30 minutes, so 1/2<3/5 (half is less time than 3/5). Answer 2. Also 5/10 is less than 6/10 because 5<6 (5 less than 6).
