A half is two quarters (think of half a dollar and two quarters). If we take away one quarter, we have one quarter left. So 1/2-1/4=2/4-1/4=1/4.

Let x of a cuo water left
1/2 = 1/4+x
x = 1/2-1/4
x = 1/4
