First, do these steps; divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and repeat. Step 1: Divide 5603 and 61. Step 2: Multiply what number can go to 560. Don't go over. You can also estimate. That does not work all the time though. So the number that goes to 560 is 9 because 61 x 9 is 549. Step 3: Subtract 560 - 549 which is 19. Step 4: Bring down the number 3. Step 5: Repeat and you will get 91.852459016393.

First do a quick estimate of the answer: 5400/60=90, so we know that the answer will be around 90.

Now we do long division.

The first digit of the answer is expected to be 9: 9*61=549. So we use the first three digits to subtract 549 from:

560-549=11. Now bring down the last digit to make 113. 2*61=122 is too big, so the next digit is 1, and subtract 61 from 113=52. So far the answer is 91. Now we need to insert a decimal point and bring down a zero to make 52 into 520. We already know 9*61=549 which is too big, so we try 8*61=488. 520-488=32. So far the answer is 91.8. Bring down another zero: 320. 320-5*61=320-305=15, so the answer is now 91.85. Bring down zero: 150. 150-2*61=150-122=28 and so on. If we carry on we get 91.8524... for as many decimals as we need. There is repetition eventually. I think the decimal pattern repeats after 60 digits.

Yes, but the questioner wanted to see how you worked it out (without a calculator)!
