The question isn't clearly stated. If there are three different lengths we haven't been given how much of each length was being used. If we call the numbers of each length L, M and S for long, medium and short then we know that L+M+S=53 and the total length used is 12L+8M+6S feet. We can write this as 12L+8M+6(53-L-M)=6L+2M+318 feet. All we need to know is L and M. For example, the average number of each length is 53/3=17.67. If L=M=18 and S=17 then the total length is 8*18+318=144+318=462 feet, or 12*18+8*18+6*17=462 feet.
