I read this as (17^3x)-1=95. So 17^3x=96 and to solve this we need to take logs of both sides: 3xlog17=log96. It doesn't matter what base of logs we use, so we'll use 10: 3x*1.2304=1.9823. Therefore x=1.9823/(3*1.2304)=0.537.
