Arctan is the same as tan^-1. Let y=arctanx. Then x=tany and siny = x/sqrt(1+x^2) = sin(arctanx). Draw a right angle triangle with sides x, 1 and hypotenuse sqrt(1+x^2) to get the hang of the trigonometry.
