QUESTION: At a hockey game, a vender sold a combined total of 252 sodas and hot dogs. The number of sodas sold was three times the number of hot dogs sold. Find the number of sodas and the number of hot dogs sold.

Let S be the number of sodas sold.

Let H be the number of hot dogs sold.

Then S + H = 252  (the total number of sales)

Also, S = 3*H

Substituting for S = 3H into the 1st equation,

3H + H = 252

4H = 252

H = 63

And S = 3H = 3*63 = 189

Numbers sold are: 189 sodas and 63 hot dogs
