Let's see how many laps Nona swam. Nona swam half 18=9 laps. Les swam 18-7=11 laps. If the letters M, N and L stand for the number of laps each swam, then N=M/2 and L=M-7. Substituting M=L+7, then N=(L+7)/2. In words, Nona swam half as many laps as Les would have swum if he had swum 7 more laps.
