This isn't mathematics; but within the psychology of persuasion the principles are:

  1. Reciprocity: if generosity appears to be shown to you, you are likely to be generous yourself
  2. Scarcity: "there are just two left at this bargain price"
  3. Authority, especially medical authority: "you need five vegetables a day to preserve your health and fitness"
  4. Commitment: you would support an indisputable good cause, wouldn't you?
  5. Alikeness: recommendation from someone who appears to be similar to yourself
  6. Consensus: "all your neighbours are using it"
