3x^2+x+2=0 need to know how to compute the discriminant

The discriminant is b^2 - 4ac. The letters a, b and c refer to the
constants in the given formula. a is the coefficient of x^2,
b is the coefficient of x, and c is the constant that stands alone.
In your problem, a is 3, b is 1 and c is 2. Therefore, the discriminant
is 1^2 - 4*3*2.

Solving this gives 1 - 24 = -23.

You didn't ask, but because this value is negative, the equation has no real roots.
What that means is that the graph of this parabola does not cross the x-axis.
