The 1st equation can be rearranged: y=x+5. So we can put this value of y into the 2nd equation: 4x-x-5=9, 3x=14, x=14/3. Substitute this into y=x+5=14/3+5=29/3.

Check result: y-5=29/3-5=14/3=x; 4x-y=56/3-29/3=27/3=9.
