x+3y=-8 so x=-3y-8; substitute for x in the other equation:

4(-3y-8)-3y=13,

-12y-32-3y=13,

-15y=13+32=45, y=-45/15=-3.

Therefore x=-3y-8=9-8=1.

SOLUTION x=1, y=-3.
