A vertex is often called a corner. It's the point where two lines or curves meet, or a curve meets a line at an angle. A triangle, for example has three vertices. A circle meets a diameter at two vertices, one at each end of the diameter.

In the case of curves a vertex is a maximum or minimum point (often called a stationary point or turning point). A parabola, for example has one vertex. A circle has no vertices.
