I don't understand why I would perform a check on a rational equation, so why is it necessary?

You will need to check the denominator is non-zero.
If the denominator is zero for some value of x, the equation does not exist at that particular value of x.
Hence, if you solve the equation and get that particular value, you will need to reject it, as the equation does not exist at that point.
