Two types of candy sell for $2.50 per pound and $4.00 per pound. A store clerk is trying to make a 5 pound mixture of $17.60.How much of each candy should be included in the mixture?

1). x + y = 5

2). 2.5x + 4y = 17.60

using 1) solve for y

x + y = 5

y = 5 - x

substitute into 2).

2.5x + 4y = 17.60

2.5x + 4(5 - x) = 17.60

2.5x + 20 - 4x = 17.60

-1.5x = 17.60 - 20

-1.5x = -2.4

x = 2.4/1.5 = .8/.5 * 10/10

x = 8/5

y = 5 - 8/5

y = 17/5
