Vertical directrix implies that the parabola is on its side so has the form x-h=a(y-k)^2. The vertex lies midway between directrix and focus (midway between x=-3 and x=3, so x=0 is the x coord of the vertex), so the vertex is at (0,7). The focus is on the inside of the parabola so the arms point to the left. The axis of symmetry is horizontal at y=7. Therefore (0,1) is 7-1=6 units away from the axis of symmetry.
