I added the   =y  in the question.  I am simply trying to "solve the problem" or "differentiate the expression" as a teacher in order to access the key for some Problem of the Day activities in the Problem of the Day activity at www.transum.org

Don't know calculus and any solutions I've tried don't seem to work.

I assume you mean that you want to differentiate the above expression.

y = 3x^2 + 5x - 7

After differentiating, you will get:

y' = 6x + 5

Thank you!  That's what I needed!
