Two step equation: 2x + 1 = 7 Subtract 1 on both sides and then divide by 2. Multi-step equation: 2x – 5 + 6x = 6x + 7 Combine 'like' terms on the same side of the equation, then add to and subtract to get x's on one side of the equation and numbers on the other. In the final step, divide to find out what x equals.
