I would get all the r's on one side of the equation.  Multiply both sides by (r-8) the denominator

7-r/8-r=1/r-8

(7-r)(r-8)/(8-r) = 1

Now multiply the bottom by -1

(7 - r) (r - 8) / -(r - 8) = 1

-(7 - r) = 1

r - 7 = 1

r = 8
