If I read this correctly, i97-i=97i-i=96i.

But if this is meant to read i^97-i the result is totally different. i^2=-1; i^3=-i; i^4=1, so i^96=(i^4)^24=1^24=1. Therefore i^97=i^96*i=i, and i^97-i=i-i=0 (second answer).
