0.17=0.12*(640,000/x)

x=(0.12/0.17)*640,000

Multiply both sides of the equation by x to get rid of the fraction containing x: .17x=.12*640000. The right side can also be written 12*6400 because you can take two zeroes from 640000 and use them to convert .12 to 12. Now you can see your way to calculating the right side: 76800. On the left we have .17x. If we divide both sides of the equation by .17 we will be left with just x on the left. Dividing by .17 is the same as dividing by 17/100, but when we divide by a fraction we invert it to become 100/17 and then we multiply: x=76800*100/17= 7680000/17=451764. 71 approx.

Another approach is to remove the decimals .17 and .12 by multiplying both sides of the equation by 100: 17=12*(640000/x). Then multiply both sides by x: 17x=12*640000. x=12*640000/17=7680000/17=451764.71.

Is it any clearer now?
