OK, forgetful mom, what's putting you off, the decimals or the long division or both? Let's tackle the decimals first. You can get rid of them by multiplying both numbers by 10 which moves the decimal point a place to the right out of sight. Now we have 53 divided by 1679, which is kind of unusual. Sure it isn't 167.9 divided by 5.3? Let's carry on with 53÷1679. 53 is the dividend so write it out and put a decimal point after the 3 followed by as many zeroes as you like: 53.0000... Draw a line over the top and to the left write the divisor and a vertical line: 1679 | 53.00...  Obviously 1679 won't divide into 53, nor 530, but it will divide into 5300. Take a guess at how many times. Three? 3*1679=5037. Write 5037 under 5300 and immediately above on the quotient line write 3. It lines up with the second zero after the decimal point, so it has to look like .03. Subtract 5037 from 5300 to get 263 and bring down the next zero: 2630. 1679 goes into this once, so write 1 next to the 3 in the quotient: .31. Subtract to get 951 and bring down the next zero, and carry on for as long as you can bear or as long as necessary and you have your answer. You should get .0315664... normally written 0.0315664... The zero at the beginning is just there so that the decimal point doesn't get lost. You're now supermom!
