(10-6)(22-17)=20 in decimal which is 24 in octal (base 8).

Another solution is to add together the digits making up each number: 6 10 17 22 and 24 become 6 1 8 4 and 6. (8-6)*1+4=6 or (8-6)/1+4=6. In other words (17-6)*10+22=24 or (17-6)/10+22=24, provided we treat 17 as 1+7, etc.
