since the first equation x = y + 6 is all ready set to be substituted, put y + 6 in for x in the second equation

y = -2 - (y + 6)    distribute the negative so y = -2 - y - 6

combine like terms so y = -8 - y

add y to both sides 2y = -8

divide both sides by 2 and y = -4

Replace y with -4 in the first equation and x = -4 + 6 or x=2

point is then (2, -4)
