Тhere are two methods to solve it. Let's use the elimination method.

Divide both sides of the first equation by 2. (Why????)

x +1/2y=5

Add the second equation with the one above.

x+1/2y+3x-1/2y=5+11

4x=16 (That's why!!! y is gone!)

x=4

Plug x=4 into one of the equations to find y.

8+y=10

y=2

Check:

8+2-10

12-1=11
