line 1...x-2y=3 become 2y=x-3...y=(x/2)-1.5

line 2...2x+y=14  become y=-2x+14

thus, -2x+14=(x/2)-1.5

or -2.5x=-14-1.5....=-15.5

x=15.5/2.5

x=6.2

y=-2x+14=-12.4+14=1.6
