Problem: X+5y=11 2x+5y=-12
Please explain how to figure answer

1) x + 5y = 11
2) 2x + 5y = -12

Subtract equation 1 from equation 2, eliminating the y.

  2x + 5y = -12)
-( x + 5y =   11)
---------------------
    x         = -23
x = -23

Solve for y.

x + 5y = 11
-23 + 5y = 11
5y = 11 + 23
5y = 34
y = 34/5

Check.

2x + 5y = -12
2(-23) + 5(34/5) = -12
-46 + 34 = -12
-12 = -12

Answer: x = -23, y = 34/5
