To solve problem, first find the percentage of drives that fail.  This is simple because 5 of every 100 fail. which is 5/100.  A percentage can be expressed as a number over 100

5 of 100 or 5% of all drives fail

multiply this 5% by the 1040 drives to find out how many of the 1040 drives fail.

convert the percentage to a decimal by moving the decimal point two places to the left to get .05 times 1040

52 of the 1040 drives will fail.
