4(x - 1)^2 = 23  4 is 2^2 now take the square root of both sides.  There are two answers positive and negative.

2(x - 1) = +or- sqrt(23)

x - 1 = +or- sqrt(23)/2

x = 1 +or- sqrt(23)/2
