The first step is to combine like terms. So first you would combine 2z an -z to get z-4=4. Then you would get the variable alone on one side of the equation. To do so add 4 to the other side. In the end z=8
by

2z-4-z=4    do:z-4=4 then,

                         +4 +4

                           z=8                   smiley
