i don't know this and i am studying for a big test i wasn't there for the lesson and the notes don't make sense to me

A negative exponent is just the reciprocal of the quantity with the corresponding positive exponent.

Examples: x-2=1/x2, x3y-4=x3/y4, (3x)-2=1/(3x)2=1/(9x2), 1/x-5=x5, ...
