To get a driving licence, you have to pass a theory test and a practical. The probability that joe passes his theory test is 0.8

If he passes his theory test, he has a 0.6 chance of passing his practical. Otherwise the chance of passing his practical is only 0.2

Giving your answers to 2 dp, find firstly, the probability that he gets his driving licence. Secondly, given that he fails to get his driving licence, find the probability that he failed because of his practical only.

PART 1: Probability of passing both tests=0.8×0.6=0.48, which is the probability of getting a licence.

The probability p of failing the theory test is 0.2.

The conditions for failing to get a licence are:

(1) failing the theory, but passing the practical

(2) failing the practical, but passing the theory

(3) failing the practical and the theory

p(1)=0.2×0.2=0.04

p(2)=0.8×0.4=0.32

p(3)=0.2×0.8=0.16

Total=0.52=1-0.48

PART 2: (2) applies, so the probability is 0.32.
