This formula is} \\ \frac {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a} \text{ for } ax^2+bx+c = 0 \\ \text {In the quadratic formula this gives:} \; \; \; \frac{9 \pm \sqrt{^-9^2-4 \cdot 1 \cdot 18}}{2 \cdot 1} \text{ which shortens to} \\ \frac{9 \pm \sqrt{81-72}}{2} \Leftrightarrow \frac{9 \pm \sqrt{9}}{2} \Leftrightarrow \frac {9 \pm 3}{2} \\ \text{for the plus,} \frac{9+3}{2}= 6 \text{ and for the minnus } \frac {9-3}{2} = 3 \\ \text {so the solutions for x are } 3,6.$
