Multiply 1st eqn by 3: x+3y=9, so x=9-3y and the 2nd eqn by 12: 48y=x-60, so x=48y+60.

So x=9-3y=48y+60.

Solve 9-3y=48y+60 for y:

9-60=51y, -51=51y, -1=y, so y=-1, therefore x=9-3y=9+3=12; or x=48y+60=-48+60=12.

x=12, y=-1. Check by substituting these values into the original equations:
