express the width as a function of the length x.

express the width y as a function of the length x, one thousand feet of chain-link fence is to be used to construct six cages.
y is w - width, x is length l

2y + 7x = 1000 solve for x:
7x = 1000 - 2y
x = (1000 - 2y)/7
