Plane 1: 564 km/h Plane 2 leaves one half hour later traveling 744 km/h what is the distance traveled by plane 2?

Plane 1: 564 km/h Plane 2 leaves one half hour later traveling 744 km/h How long will it take plane 2 to over take Plane 1?

Obviously, if Plane 2 overtakes Plane 1, BOTH planes have traveled the same distance.

The time for Plane 2 to overtake Plane 1 will be t. Because Plane 2 left one half hour later, the time Plane 1 flew will be (t + 0.5)

d = 564 (t + 0.5)     Plane 1
d = 744t                Plane 2

744t = 564 (t + 0.5) = 564t + 282
744t - 564t = 282
180t = 282
t = 1.566 hr  (about 1 hr 34 minutes)

So, it took Plane 2  1.566 hrs to overtake Plane 1
Flying 744 km/hr * 1.566 hr = 1165 km (rounded)

Plane 1 flew 1.566 + 0.5 hr = 2.066 hr
Flying 564 km/h * 2.066 hr = 1165 km (rounded)
