20 + 8 + 17 + 3 + (-14) + (-4) / 6    add the numbers together and divide by the number of quanities (6).  I placed the positive and negative numbers togetrher.

48 - 18 = 30 / 6     add all the positive together and add all the negatives together, then add together the sums

the mean is 5 (30/6)
