 5 minus 3/8 you times the whole number which is 5 and times the denominator which is 8 so 5 times 8 is 40 so 40/8 minus 3/8 is 37/8 so you divide 37 and 8 which is left over 4 remeinder 5 and you put 8 as the denominator so the answer is 4 5/8. hope this helped smiley
