Subtract the whole numbers first: 3-1=2; now subtract the fractions: 3/5-1/4, using a common denominator (20). 3/5=4*3/(4*5)=12/20; 1/4=5*1/(5*4)=5/20. So we have 12/20-5/20 or (12-5)/20=7/20. Now add in the whole number result from earlier: 2 7/20.
